The Special begins with Luna telling us that the following story had happened while the girls were studying for their High School exams.
The time is half past six in the morning and Ami is still sleeping. The girl wakes up rubbing her eyes and stretching in the bed. She opens the window and sees a few birds on the terrace. "Good morning," she says and smiles.
Ami is in the bath reading a book. She introduces herself - "I am Ami Mizuno. I was born on September 10th. I am a Virgo, blood type A. My hobby is reading. Every morning, I get to school forty minutes early to read."
She gets out of the bath and goes to the kitchen to have breakfast. Ami uncovers a plate with sandwiches. Sandwiches are her favourite food because she can eat them while she studies.
Then the girl exits her home and sets off to school. Ami says that her favourite colour is blue, her favourite sport is swimming and her best subject is Maths.
As she enters school, she tells us that she is not good at receiving love letters. Ami opens her locker and stuns. It is a... love letter. Her face turns red and she screams, everybody outside and inside the building hearing her.
Later, while walking, Ami tells her friends, which include Usagi, Chibi-Usa, Rei, Makoto, and Minako, about the love letter. Usagi says that she would be glad to have to deal with love letter problems, the others agree, and Minako says a proverb, but she does not say it correctly, as always. The girls stun, Usagi even drops her schoolbag. Artemis corrects her. At that very rather funny moment, Ami starts laughing. She looks at the sky and says that there is only one thing that they should be worrying about... "Studying," the other girls say. Ami puts on her glasses and says that there is no word "love" in her dictionary. She becomes more serious and cold wind appears.
Makoto asks her friends what was wrong. She shows them a magazine. The tall brunette takes has a look at it. Results from recent exams have been posted on page forty-two. "Mercury" has scored 100 %. Ami explains to her friends that the students who take part in those exams send their results under a code name. Ami has chosen Mercury as her pseudonym. The girl points to another person's score. Mercurius has scored 100 %, too, and she supposes that the he might be a new enemy who is challenging her. The others tell that she is overdoing it.
Ami goes to more and more practice exams and hopes to meet Mercurius.
While reading a book at school, she thinks that it is a really thrilling to have a rival. She passes by some students, but goes back and looks at a board which some scores are written on. She promises that she will not back down.
The Hikawa Shirine is shown and Luna says that something has changed with Ami. Inside the building, the girl is seen surrounded by a large pile of text-books. She is studying very hard. She checks the magazine with the scores and tells Usagi and the others that Mercurius is on the top again. She really wants to meet this person. Suddenly, Minako says that Ami can be in love! Ami, however, says that the wants her boyfriend to be like Enstein. The girls are disappointed.
The girls, without Ami, are passionately discussing the problem of their intelligent friend. They all agree that they must help her find out Mercurius' identity.
The scene switches to the school. Usagi is walking through hall heading to the exit, but she hears someone calling her. It is Naru and Umino. The blonde gets a scary face and asks Umino if he knew anything about Mercurius. He touches his glasses and says that he is his friend, then falls on the floor.
Meanwhile, Ami, with a lot of books, is in front of the building of the Tutorial Seminar. The girl says that she will defeat Mercurius, and enters. Eventually, after repeating that she will study hard and hard and hard, she falls asleep on her desk. She awakens, but she period is over. She feels bad. Behind the window of the room, a monster called Bonnone appears and says that she feels the aura of a girl in love. Ami exits the building, mentioning Mercurius again.
Nearby, Umino takes Usagi, Rei, Makoto, and Minako to the place where Mercurius studies - the Tutorial Seminar. Ami's rival shows up and meets gang.
At her home, Ami is lying ill in the bed. She remembers Mercurius. Bonnone appears and says that the girl is haunted by her desires. She throws love letters against the girl. She yells out, "LOVE LETTER." The she tries to get up, but she is too ill. At that very moment, balloons appear around Ami's head. Each of them contains equations, but they burst!
Usagi, Chibi-Usa, and Mamoru are in front of Ami's apartment. Mamoru asks his girlfriend what was wrong, and she starts talking about Mercurius, they hear Ami's screams - all of the balloons are burtsting!! Bonnone laughs evilly. The girl, meanwhile, is trying to take a love letter off from her face.
Usagi rushes straight to the apartment, but there is no floor - the whole room is turned into a dimension. Chibi-Usa asks the monster what her name is, but before she manages to reply, Ami yells out that she is Mercurius! Bonnone disagrees, but Ami will not listen. The girl transforms by saying "Mercury Crystal Power! Make-Up!" Sailor Mercury gives her speech - she is Sailor Soldier of love and intelligence! She attacks the monster with "Mercury Aqua Mirage", and the evil creature is destroyed, even though it was not Mercurius.
The room is back to its normal, and Sailor Mercury falls on her bed saying, "I feel so much better..."
The scene switches to the Game Center, and while the girls without Ami decide to not mention Mercuris again, Ami appears mysteriously behind them. Usagi shows her the magazine Minako was looking at. On the cover, there is a handsome male star. That is just how Ami imagined him - like an young Enstein! Meanwhile, Usagi is happy that Ami has not seen the real Mercurius - he looked like Umino! And his pseudonym is Mercurius, because his real name is Suri Kurume, and Suri Kurume backwards is Mercurius, explains Usagi-sensei.
Later, Ami screams again. Mercurius is on the top, again, although she "destroyed" him!! Usagi tries to explain that she has not destroyed him, but Bonnone, but Ami just says to leave it to her. Ami climbs the stairs and she says that she is going to keep giving her best!
